Description

Details of Service

There are currently four Biomedical engineers based in UHK. The engineers provide technical and clinical support for the diverse and complex medical devices and equipment in the different clinical areas of the hospital, such as theatres, maternity services, intensive care units, dialysis, cardiology, endoscopy, and laboratories, to name just some of the specialist areas. Some of the medical devices are maintained in-house by the engineers, some are on service contracts with the medical device equipment suppliers, and some others are supported by a combination of in-house engineers and company engineers plus clinical specialists.

Engineers from Biomedical Engineering form part of the multi-disciplinary Product Evaluation Group (PEG) as part of a tendering process. In these instances, they provide engineering expertise, formulating the necessary technical specifications that meet the clinical requirements. They perform the product evaluations with the other members of the PEG. Following the purchase of the medical devices, assist in overseeing the installation, commissioning, and recording of the medical devices, and then support the management of the device throughout the device lifecycle. Engineers provide clinical support and consultancy services to the business managers, services managers, and medical staff, and other HSCPs.

As the complexity, inter connectivity, and interdependence of medical devices continue to grow, our engineers work closely in partnership with other engineering grades in the health sector, such as those supporting and overseeing ICT, Hospital Networks, and Estates.

Care is delivered in a variety of settings, and new approaches and models of care to follow the care demands of the health service are being advanced within the context of overall healthcare reform, to include Slaintécare.

Purpose of the Post
