purpose of the role:
The Principal Clinical Engineering Technician will participate through the operational structure of the MPCE Department in the provision of clinical engineering services in the Hospital.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide the Department’s administration with such records of his/her  work as are deemed to be necessary
  • Contribute as required to the development of the Department’s policies and services, where required, through participation in the work of, and contributing to the management of, the appropriate operational teams and groups
  • Provide maintenance services for electromedical and/or other equipment in respect of its functional, electronic, optical, electrical and mechanical aspects to a standard of safety, accuracy and reliability consistent with its function and with professional standards
  • Assist with the ongoing development, co-ordination and implementation of the preventative schedule maintenance and safety programmes
  • Advise on the selection, specification, acceptance testing, commissioning and safety of new equipment and services
  • Advise where required, on new technical installations
  • Support the nursing, medical and technical staff in the implementation of patient care involving technology
  • Develop as required specialist fields of interest within the fields of Clinical Engineering
  • Participate, as required, in education, training and research programmes
  • The holder of the post will be encouraged to obtain Professional Engineering Registration Status
  • Participate if required to do so in the 24 hours on-call service
  • Assist with the co-ordination of staff within the Department. Ensure that tasks are allocated according to patient needs and applying maximum delegation compatible with safety
  • Participate in developing and leading the introduction of new ideas and methods according to hospital policy and service plan
  • Assist in maintaining a database of electro-medical equipment in the Hospital
  • Assist in the drafting of equipment specifications
  • Assist in the determination of the cost effectiveness of service contracts
  • Assist in the provision of documentation and manuals for the effective management of electro-medical equipment
  • Assist with the organisation of the acceptance testing of new electro-medical equipment
  • Perform and supervise the calibration, service and repair of electro-medical equipment
  • Ensure that test equipment is calibrated and functional
  • Maintain an inventory of test equipment and spare parts in the Department
  • Report to the Head of Clinical Engineering Services on all relevant areas of responsibility
  • Participate in the evaluation of any accident or incident related to electro-medical equipment
  • Participate, if required, in the departments out of hour’s ‘on-call service’
  • Participate in the development of integrated application software to support the operational and management systems for the Clinical Engineering Department. Assist in ensuring that the Clinical Engineering Team make the most effective and efficient use of developments in information technology for both patient care and administrative support in a manner which integrates well with systems throughout the organization
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned by the Head of Clinical Engineering Services

Qualifications & Experience required
Must have:

  • Hold as a minimum a recognised qualification at National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ),Level 7 or higher, in one of the following engineering disciplines;
  • Electronic
  • Electrical
  • Instrument Physics
  •  Industrial Instrumentation
  • Applied Physics
  • Mechanical
  • Mechtronics
  • Biomedical Engineering

or

  • Hold a recognised qualification at least equivalent to one of the above

and

  • Have a minimum of five years postgraduate satisfactory and relevant experience in an appropriate medical industrial field including at least three years in a clinical engineering environment
  • Candidates must possess the requisite knowledge and ability (including a high standard of suitability and administrative capacity) for the proper discharge of the duties of the office

Reward & Recognition

  • Remuneration is in accordance with the Department of Health Consolidated Salary Scales, grade code 3163.
  • The appointment is permanent, full-time and pensionable.
  • The annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year. The leave year runs from 1st April to the 31st of March each year.
  • Normal working hours are 37 worked over 5 days. Your contracted hours of work are liable to change between the hours of 8 am to 8 pm over 7 days to meet the requirements for extended day services in accordance with the terms of the Framework Agreement.
