Digital Health Framework. Disruption & Development Needs Clinical Safety Engineers

Meabh is the Digital Health Clinical Safety Lead in the HSE. Over the last year, she has been involved in many of the exciting developments around the Digital Transformation of Health in the HSE. In her previous role as Principal Physicist in Neuroscience at Beaumont Hospital, where she lead a team specialising in scientific and technical support to neurosurgery and neurology.  Meabh has been involved in the provision of health technology advice, working across all medical specialties and in particular around innovation and digital health.

Previous roles included Interim COO at Beaumont Hospital and Business Continuity Lead for the Hospital Information System.  Meabh also served on the HPRA Advisory Committee on Medical Devices, and is a current member of the Health Informatics Standards Committee co-ordinated by NSAI.

Meabh holds a Bachelor of Engineering Degree and MSc in Physical Sciences in Medicine from Trinity College, Dublin and an MSc in Business Management from Dublin City University.

Disruption & Development Needs Clinical Safety Engineers

This paper sets out implications of the Department of Health’s “Digital for Care – A Digital Health Framework for Ireland 2024-2030”, and the HSE’s “Digital Health Strategic Implementation Roadmap”, for the medical technology landscape in Ireland.  The case is made for a realignment of Clinical Engineering focus to ensure patient safety underpins the deployment of apps, wearables, remote health monitoring, clinical decision support tools and AI algorithms used in clinical diagnosis and treatment.
