Foreword

As the nice weather finally decides to grace us with its presence, the BEAI are embracing the high spirits and enthusiasm that come with the summer months and are working hard to progress our ideas and plans for the year ahead, as we move forward in achieving our objectives set out in our Strategic Plan.

Spectrum has been a fundamental output of the BEAI since its inception in the 1990s, and we believe that the combination of the printed and digital formats continue to serve us well.

This edition of Spectrum is jam packed with interesting, educational and thought provoking articles – we hear about the importance of strategic planning in the Middle East by Eugene Galvin, Eoin McDonnell builds on his engaging presentation and demo of 3D printing from last year’s Annual Scientific Conference and Brendan Kelly and his co-authors outline deliberate practice techniques in emergency medicine to name just a few!

The BEAI held its Annual General Meeting in April, with some exciting new developments and plans set out for 2016 and onwards. As the incoming Chairperson, I am committed to leading this organisation as we progress and improve the services and opportunities we o¢er our members, whilst also continuing to represent the country’s voice in clinical engineering with the international community.

This year’s AGM saw the expansion of our team to include some new appointments, which we believe will further strengthen our organisation and assist with achieving our objectives for the future – further information on the AGM and a copy of the Annual Report by the outgoing Chairperson, Meabh Smith, can be found on page 30.

Work is well underway for this year’s Annual Scientific Conference, which takes place on Friday, September 30, in the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Santry, Dublin 9.

We are delighted to be working with Cardiac Services Ltd as our Gold Sponsor for 2016, with 22 Silver Sponsors also exhibiting at the conference.

This year’s theme is ‘Hospitals without Walls’, focusing on the use of technology to connect patients in their appropriate care setting to the specialist care providers that they require. Furthermore, I would like to invite you all to join with us in celebrating our 21st conference at a social event on the Friday evening, with food and drink, entertainment and the opportunity to catch up with colleagues and friends alike.

Wishing you all a nice summer and looking forward to working with everyone in the coming year.

Brian Kearney
Chairperson, BEAI
