Foreword

Welcome to the Spring edition of our BEAI Spectrum Journal

As we go to press with this issue, Ireland is in the grip of the COVID-19 crisis. Never before, in my own lifetime, has the Irish medical community and the general public been called to come together to tackle such an enormous challenge and how we respond will be crucial in the coming weeks. The BEAI have set up a group for sharing of information both nationally and internationally, please contact Peter Grainger (peter.grainger@hse.ie) for access to this. Clinical Engineers are vital to tackling this crisis – they are the connection between the clinicians and the medical technology, and are working tirelessly to not only ensure that all medical devices are in place and working, but that new and innovative technologies are deployed to assist with patient care during this time. I am confident that by working together with the clinicians, hospital management and other health and social care staff, and by learning from our colleagues internationally, we can reduce the impact and provide the best possible quality of care to our patients.

We have another informative edition of our BEAI Spectrum Journal, with lots of interesting content from our colleagues and peers. I would like to thank all of our contributors for providing such insightful reports and educational features.

Inside, we offer a short report from the 2019 BEAI Annual Scientific Conference, which took place in the Clayton Hotel, Silver Springs on October 4. The conference enjoyed growing numbers of attendance once again and we look forward to this year’s event in the winter. We would like to thank our Gold Sponsors, Olympus, for their support and contribution, as well as our 20 Silver Sponsors who exhibited on the day.

Our Focus in this edition looks at bladder scanner technology. Brian Turvey, clinical sales manager at Cardiogenics Ltd looks at the evolution, use and management of this technology in Irish hospitals.

Elsewhere Mark Power BEng MSc MIEI, technical services manager at B. Braun Medical Ireland Ltd, offers an overview of the recent Clinical and Technical Education Seminar at the newly opened B. Braun Wellstone Midlands Renal Care Centre.

And we also put a spotlight on women in engineering, with a new Focus highlighting the work of some of our female colleagues, beginning with a feature from Andrea Fottrell, Principal Clinical Engineering Technician at Beaumont Hospital, Dublin, who discusses the changes she has witnessed in clinical engineering over her career and the value of effective teamwork.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we will be postponing many of our standard activity (CPD events, expert group meetings), but will continue to bring the engineering community and clinicians together to discuss and learn how best to tackle this crisis through web conferencing, social media and direct contact.

Many thanks to Frank Kelly and his team for compiling another great edition of Spectrum Journal – it is a journal for you all and I would encourage you to contact Frank at spectrum@beai.ie with any contents ideas for future editions.

Wishing you all the best, particularly in these challenging times.

Kind Regards

Brian Kearney
