Foreword

Welcome to the Spring 2025 edition of Spectrum Journal, which includes a focus on careers and education abroad. Within this issue readers can also enjoy insightful reports, as well as latest news and research.

On page 12 we reveal feedback received from an online survey following our Annual Scientific Conference (ASC) in Croke Park last September.

This survey was produced to quantify the success of the conference as well as gauge any additional changes or improvements members would like to see in future conferences.

Within our overseas focus, on page 14 Mulongoti Fredrick – a Biomedical Engineering Technologist at Livingstone University Teaching Hospital – outlines his career so far based in Zambia. Meanwhile, on page 16, Eng. Ganizani Phiri, a registered Engineer at Engineering Institute of Zambia EIZ, discusses the critical role medical devices play in delivering quality healthcare. And on page 17 John Latham reports on the Malaysia-Ireland Training Programme for Family Medicine, MInTFM, which was launched in October 2019 with an initial 35 trainees.

Elsewhere, on page 20 Becky Carroll – Clinical Research Senior Data Manager at NHS England, London – reports on utilising advanced medical equipment to not only treat eczema symptoms but also evaluate the long-term impacts of the condition and its treatments on overall wellbeing.

On page 22 Senior Dr Harish Kambampati – a Post Doctoral Researcher on the Smart Self-care for Dementia at the Digital Futures Research Hub, TU Dublin – examines the development of a comprehensive, sensor-based computerised solution to support individuals with dementia in maintaining their health and independence.

In a career focus on page 24, Ryan Suen – Senior Clinical Engineer at the National Maternity Hospital (NMH), Dublin.
