Foreword
It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to this digital edition of Spectrum Journal which is focused on the BEAI’s 27th Annual Scientific Conference which was held in Croke Park, Dublin at the end of September. The theme of this year’s conference was ‘From Bits to Bedside: The Challenging World of Driving Innovation, Delivering on Safety’.
As always, the conference organising committee prepared a programme representative of the current status and future development of the Biomedical and Clinical Engineering profession. We had presentations on Digital Health; the use of technology to alleviate demographic challenges; how innovation can improve the patient experience; the input of Clinical Engineering in delivering a hybrid theatre; a careers café and a live demo in the afternoon parallel session followed by a panel discussion on Clinical Engineering challenges and opportunities and much more. We sought to strike a balance between hospital based clinical engineers, academia and industry.
Once again this year, we utilised the model of a single Gold Sponsor with multiple silver exhibitors, allowing the attendees to network and view the products and services of over 40 medical technology companies in the exhibition hall. Other stands included the HSE’s Health & Social Care Professions (HSCP), the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) and the National Standards of Ireland (NSAI).
Throughout the year we encourage Biomedical and Clinical Engineers to highlight the incredible contributions you make to the Irish healthcare system. Together, with our Health & Social Care Professional colleagues, Clinical Engineering has a significant amount to offer the health service in its objective to improve the delivery of patient care in a safe, high quality and effective manner. Technological continues to advance at an unprecedented rate, but unless managed appropriately, it can introduce significant risks to the safe delivery of healthcare. Clinical Engineers are uniquely placed to manage healthcare technology and to advise both the acute and community services on medical device and healthcare technology management.
A significant amount of work goes into organising this conference and I would like to acknowledge the organising committee this year, which comprised of Oleg Shrolik, John Adlington, Meabh Smith, Brian Kearney, Frank Kelly, Leighton Curry, Fathima Rinza and Mairead Dennehy. I would like to thank Cardiac Services as our Gold Sponsor for 2024 – Cheryl Doan, Ciaran McGuinness and their team have provided tremendous support and input in making this day possible. And finally, I’d like to thank each of our Session Chairperson’s, who facilitated the presentations and Q&A sessions.
I hope those of you who attended found the day to be insightful and thought provoking; and I hope you enjoy this round-up of the event.
Eoghan Hayden,
Chairperson, BEAI
