Annual Scientific Conference 2020 On-Line: Presentations

Central Equipment Library

Organization:
Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore

The comprehensive management of medical device equipment ensures fully operational devices are readily available for use in order to provide quality safe care for patients. The Clinical Engineering Department in the Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore identified that the introduction of a centralised equipment library would contribute considerably to achieving this.

Performance Verification of AER Connection Sets

Organization:
AER connection sets are a vital part of a channelled endoscope decontamination process, ensuring that the endoscope are adequately flushed with detergent and disinfectant during reprocessing. Currently there are no approved or recommended methods to test that AER connectors make an adequate seal. If a connector is damaged or has missing O-rings the scope channel may not be adequately irrigated. Resulting in less detergent, PAA and rinse water flowing through the contaminated scope during a wash cycle. Air purge will also be affected.

Flash Therapy

Author:
Laszlo-Edward Maksay
Organization:
St Lukes Hospital Rathgar
There is emerging evidence that very high dose rates, referred to as Flash therapy, can provide significant benefits when using radiation for cancer treatment. Normal clinical linear accelerator (linac) operation delivers a dose rate about 10-2Gy/s. The objective of this project is to design a device that will allow Flash Therapy which involves the modification of a linac to deliver 40- 150Gy/s [1] in 1s bursts.

Cystic Fibrosis Detection

Organization:
St Vincents University Hospital
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an inherited chronic disease, primarily affecting the lungs and digestive system. This lifelong condition usually becomes more severe with age and affects both males and females in equal proportions. The symptoms and severity of CF vary from person to person, but the majority of people with the disease have both respiratory and digestive problems. It is one of the major health problems that affect the Irish population.

Dialyser Development

Organization:
St Vincents University Hospital
Willem J Kolff “ Doctor, Inventor and Engineer” Born in the Netherlands on 14th February, 1911, Willem J Kolff invented the first practical artificial kidney, which over many years was refined and perfected leading to the hemodialysis machines that are now in regular use worldwide. He began his research in dialysis at Gottingen after watching a young man die from kidney failure, and later he became interested in blood transfusion as well.

Importance of Standards in Dialysis Water Quality

Organization:
St Vincents University Hospital

Water is the common risk factor for all patients receiving hemodialysis. Errors in water treatment affect all patients on treatment in a facility at the same time. Failure to recognize poor quality water, failure to adequately treat water contaminated with chemicals, bacteria, or toxins, or failure to recognize that treatment components are not operating effectively puts hemodialysis patients at risk of injury and death.

Renal Nurses and Clinical Engineers working through Covid-19

Author:
Gladys Sadang, Michelle McQuaid
Organization:
St Vincents University Hospital
In late 2019 the World Health Organisation (WHO) reports of a severe atypical respiratory condition spreading through Wuhan Province China. World wide, National Health authorities and Hospitals were alerted that this condition is a disease caused by a new strain of coronavirus, identified as Covid-19 . COVID-19. 'CO' stands for corona, 'VI' for virus, and 'D' for disease.

Trial of an Electronic Asset Tracking System

Author:
Shane Hudson
Organization:
Tallaght University Hospital
•Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering (MPCE) manage over 8,000 assets of Medical Device Technology (MDT) at Tallaght University Hospital (TUH).
•MPCE are limited in their ability to accurately track all MDT as they are often small, light and mobile.

Improvements in Thermometer Management

Organization:
Tallaght University Hospital
Thermometersare required for indicative temperature assessment as part of patient monitoring. Due to the number of times a patients’ temperature is taken on a daily basis, clinical users need to know that they are guaranteed access to a thermometer as and when needed.

The Clinical Engineering Professional Role In The Safe Delivery Of Telemonitoring

Organization:
Univesity Hospital Galway
Telemonitoring growth in Irish hospitals has been accelerated with COVID 19. In this time equipment and software has been quickly adopted. It is necessary to ensure that medical equipment standards are maintained and patient safety held as a primary objective.
The objective of this poster is to promote the role of Clinical Engineering (CE) in this new model of care. This is for patients who would ordinarily occupy a room in the home now continues in the home environment how can CE support this.
